Bubblehead

2019 Silkscreen prints and emoji (inspired) shower cap sculptures.

The Oxford online dictionary defines a Bubblehead as “a foolish or empty-headed person.” The Bubblehead prints are inspired by a line drawing (of a profile of a woman’s face) on dollar store shower-cap packaging. This image symbolizes idealized female beauty and plastic kitsch. In the print shop, I created silkscreen prints using both the “shower cap lady” image and shower cap imagery. To create the (shower cap) sculptures, shower caps are repurposed into sculptural forms by fusing the caps together with an iron. Once fused, the shower caps become cell-like and morph into transparent colorful plastic textiles. The sculptures range in form, from abstract plastic “shape quilts” to emoji pop culture objects.
