Artist Statement and Bio

Roxanne Faber Savage

Artist Statement

Stream of consciousness and a rich store of personal memory
are the starting place for my prints and drawings. My interest in energy and power provide a central theme through which I channel my experiences. Energy is visible in my imagery and is expressed through strewn power lines, loopy crayon scribbles and scratchy/furry surface textures. I create art that seen sequentially, and has a cinematic narrative force, evoking
subconscious memories and narratives.

I make prints because I love process and the physicality of
using an etching press. The magic of printmaking is the moment when an image is transferred from matrix to surface. My work is comprised of traditional etchings, silk aquatint monoprints, and a transfer technique called Paper Lithography. Paper Lithography inspires me to experiment and print on a variety of surfaces beyond paper. Using this technique, innovative printed formats have expanded my artistic output to produce, x-rayprints, pleather ZINES, 3D Plexiglas blocks and a silk print installation with mixed media.

Whether I’m printing on non-porous surfaces or paper, my
process is about being  fearless about the unknown.
I respond intuitively to materials and develop a series of
related but varied imagery based on what’s in front of me at
the time. “Errors”are embraced and appear as distressed, unclear ephemera giving exceptional meaning to the work. My intent is to communicate the joy of transforming the familiar to the unexpected.
